Adult Learning

We begin Congregation Beth Israel’s 102nd year with an outstanding array of opportunities for Jewish learning and engagement. Members of our congregation along with visitors and guests are welcome to join us for any and all of these classes without any prior knowledge of topics and concepts. We hope to see you and look forward to learning together!

Year Round Learning

Torah Study

Every Shabbat (Saturday) Morning
9AM – Via Zoom
Instructors: CBI Clergy – No Cost

Grow in your knowledge of Torah and engage with others in discussing the Torah portions each week. As the Torah is timeless, its relevance to modern life is a part of our weekly study. It is open to everyone regardless of Jewish literacy or Hebrew knowledge. There is no preparation required. The class is led by the Congregation Beth Israel Clergy, with a healthy dose of humor and thoughtful discussion of the text. According to the Mishnah,  “The study of Torah [is greater than the sub of doing all Mitzvot] because it leads to them all.” Bagels, shmear, coffee and juice are provided.

Shir Joy: The Adult Choir of CBI

Under the direction of Cantor Seth Ettinger and music director, Jackie Huber, “Shir Joy!” brings together a passionate group of people who love music. The word “shir” means “song” and each of us has a song or two that is part of our individual identities.  Whether you have been singing all of your life, or are finally ready to make that next step from singing in the car to being up on stage, “Shir Joy is the group for you. This year Shir Joy! will be perform a variety of music programs at CBI including the first ever “CBI Sings Chanukah Sing-A-Long”, a vibrant interfaith Martin Luther King Shabbat program, and cross-cultural Shabbat experiences featuring music from around the world.

In addition to performing, Shir Joy also learns and experiences music together through off-campus trips to the theatre, opera, museums, and other alternative music spaces. You do not need to be able to read music or speak Hebrew to join “Shir Joy!”. For more information, please contact Cantor Ettinger at [email protected] and we can’t wait to sing with you!
